What Happens When A Payment Fails

A failed plan payment is retried automatically by Stripe over the following days - update your card and the next retry goes through. If every retry fails, the account moves to the Free plan. Failed domain renewals are retried roughly daily, up to 8 times.

Updated

Nothing is lost right away. When a plan payment fails, Stripe retries the charge automatically over the following days and emails you about it. The Billing page also shows a warning that your last payment failed. To fix it, update your card - on the Profile page's Payment Method tab, or through Manage Billing on the Billing page. Once the card works, the next automatic retry goes through and your plan continues. You do not need to do anything else.

If Every Retry Fails

If the card keeps declining through all of Stripe's retries, the subscription is cancelled and your account moves to the Free plan. Your websites stay online, but paid features stop: the OxyPages banner returns, custom domains stop serving, and password protection stops being enforced. Cancel Your Subscription lists everything that changes on Free. You can start a new subscription from the Billing page whenever you are ready.

Failed Domain Renewals Work Differently

Domain renewals are charged separately to your saved card, starting 30 days before the domain expires. A failed renewal charge is retried roughly once a day, up to 8 attempts, with an email each time. After the 8th failed attempt, auto-renew is switched off for that domain and it will expire unless you act. You can also pay the open renewal invoice directly in the Manage Billing portal - paying it completes the renewal. See Domain Renewals And Expiry for what expiry means.

Failed Checkouts

If a checkout page fails or you close it, nothing was charged. Just start the checkout again from the Billing page.
