The error

404 is a missing page. Change it to 403 for "you are not allowed in", 500 for a server error or 503 for maintenance - those pages are the same shape, so this tool builds them too. Anything you type is used as it is.

Show the code as

A small label reads "Error 404" above the headline. Hide it altogether for a page that just apologises in plain words.

Words

Say it is not their fault, and say what to do next. Two sentences is plenty.

How It Works

How To Use The 404 Page Generator

  1. 1

Write The Message And Set The Number

Type the big line, the friendly sentence under it and your business name. The number is a plain text field, so 404, 403, 500 or a maintenance notice all come out of the same form.

  2. 2

Add The Links That Rescue The Visit

List the pages worth offering someone who is lost - home, contact, the two or three people look for most - reorder them with the arrows, and switch on a search box if your site has a search page.

  3. 3

Save It As 404.html Or Publish It

Pick one of five looks and an accent colour, then copy the HTML, download 404.html for your own host, or press Publish and see it on a live HTTPS link in seconds.

About This Tool

What This 404 Page Generator Does

It turns a sentence, a handful of links and a colour into one self-contained HTML file: an error page that apologises properly and gives the visitor somewhere to go.

An error page is the one page you never link to and every visitor eventually finds. Left as it comes it is a white screen with a line of server text, which reads like the whole site is broken and sends people back to the search results they came from. This generator writes a replacement: your name, a sentence in plain English, and a short list of links that turn a dead end into a detour.

Who It Is For

Anyone who has moved, renamed or deleted a page and does not want the old address to be a wall: a shop that reorganised its catalogue, a freelancer who retired a portfolio. No code is needed - you fill in a form and watch the page build itself beside you. If you have downloaded a 404 page template before and spent an evening unpicking its stylesheet and its icon font, this is the short version.

How It Works

Everything happens in your browser. Type in the form and the preview rebuilds; nothing is uploaded until you press publish. The result is one document: styles inline, system fonts, the illustrated look drawn as inline SVG, a logo resized on a canvas and inlined as a data URL. That matters more here than anywhere else - an error page is reached when something has already gone wrong, so the 404 page HTML this tool writes never asks another server for a font or a stylesheet.

Two details it handles for you. Every link is made absolute, because a custom 404 page is served for every address that does not exist - a relative link like contact.html would be measured against whatever the visitor mistyped. And the page carries a noindex tag by default, because an error page has no content of its own and should not turn up in results under your name.

Limits

It makes one page, not a site. The search box submits to a search page on your own site and finds nothing if you do not have one - there is no search engine in the file. The automatic redirect is off on purpose. A 403, a 500 or a maintenance notice is the same error page template HTML with a different number, so change the number, not the tool. The meta tag generator writes richer share cards, and the coming soon page generator covers an address with nothing on it yet.

Then Put It On A Link

Name the file 404.html, put it at the top level of your OxyPages site, and it is served for any address that does not exist - the custom 404 pages guide has the details. To see it first, publish below: the page is on a free OxyPages subdomain with HTTPS in seconds, no account needed. That link lasts 30 minutes; claiming it is free and keeps it, with an address you choose and, on paid plans, a custom domain. Instant publishing accepts up to 5 MB. Name it 404.html and put it at the top level of your site. On OxyPages that file is served whenever a visitor reaches an address that does not exist; the custom 404 pages help article covers the setup. Other hosts have their own rule, and most of them use the same filename.
